Dolce & Gabbana Role out the Stars for Fall 17

We knew to expect something BIG for their fall 2017 show, and Dolce and Gabbana did just that! For this Autumn/Winter 2017 show Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana literally went through all their celebrity contacts and asked them to walk in their fashion show, which was opened by Austin Malone serenading the front row. This collection was a celebration of different body shapes, cultures, ages...just about everything, with a number of key millenials, models and social media stars present at the show. And with Jamie Foxx, Lewis Hamilton and Pamela Anderson sitting on the front row, things were just as starry off the catwalk.

The line up was pretty random. Steve Harvey's whole family basically, Madison Bear, Lady Kitty Spencer (Princess Di's neice), Domink and Alessandra Garcia-Lorido (daughters of Andy Garcia), Sophia Richie, Rafferty Law (son of Jude), Gabriel Kane Day-Lewis (son of Daniel), Jennifer Tilly (an Oscar nominated actress) and Destry Alleyn Speilberg - daughter of... yes, you guessed it Steven! This was the next generation of celebrity kids, with a number of cute children also strolling down the runway in fur ensembles accompanied by their model 'parents'. There was glitter, a lot of leopard print, tones of embellishment and even a few Justin Bieber t-shirts! Women wore sparkly gold crowns, the men looked suave in suits while the accessorise were plentiful - well, they are what makes the brand the most money. It was refreshing to see so many different body types on display with the models even smiling! Yes, they had smiles on their faces which is unheard for Milan Fashion Week.

The whole show was just so much fun. Colour, patterns and prints leaping out wherever you looked on the runway. And as expected, D&G were all over social media. I have to hand it to D&G. They're smart, tapping into what people are interested in now and using it to their advantage. Austin Malone fans don't like Dolce. But if Austin Malone is walking in the show, Dolce and Gabbana already have loads more fans who will tune in just for him. I do wonder what other brands think of their opulent fashion shows, regarding them as cheap and tacky or clever and fun? They don't follow trends and pretty much do the same thing every season, yet D&G are one of the biggest fashion brands in the world. And I LOVE THEM!

Happy and Glorious at Gucci Fall 2017

I'll admit, I really haven't been following the fall 2017 shows this season. From New York to London, I have literally just seen the odd photo from the Marc Jacobs show or the front row as seen at Burberry, but not a whole collection or show for that matter. As a fashion student I know this isn't great but I have had so much work going on for university that watching a bunch of shows every evening of clothes I can't afford is not high on my priority list. It's a shame because I love going through all the shows...

Anyway one show that I wasn't going to miss was the Gucci show, first becoming the hottest ticket at Milan Fashion Week. With Tom Hiddleston and Jared Leto on the front row, this season was inspired by nature, culture and Jane Austen, funnily enough. Models carried books by the famous author in their bags and under their arms while the English theme continued with rich floral embroidery and pretty ensembles that wouldn't look out of touch at a countryside tea party. Prints clashed, the classic red/white/green colours synonymous with Gucci and the Italian flag popped up on jackets and bags while layering was a key feature. Accessories were paid a lot of attention to with large floppy sun hat, decadent belts and huge earrings all adding to the more is more feel much loved by Alessandro Michele. And who could resist the bags? From luggage styles to mini clutches; there was something for everyone. There was also a touch of the orient with large parasols and kimono style tops and jackets featured with brightly coloured embroidery.

"If we become slaves of culture we can change the world," Alessandro said after the show, and why not? Culture what makes the world go round after all. Animal motifs ran throughout the collection which consisted of 120 male and female looks. Gender fluidity was pioneered by Gucci and 3 years on it's still going strong for the brand, with many other copying what Michele originally started.

Best Dressed at the 2017 BAFTAs

From Emma Stone in Chanel Couture and Nicole Kidman in Giorgio Armani to Tom Ford in...Tom Ford, all the stars stepped out in style tonight for the 2017 BAFTAs. Held at the Royal Albert Hall, Meryl Streep (in a tailored trouser suit) joined a host of Hollywood A-Listers for the British awards show, braving the cold weather too. Felicity Jones opted for a black Dior gown, Gucci was a hit for Naomi Harris while Penelope Cruz stunned in a metallic silver gown. Michelle Williams also went for a bit of glitter in her silver mini dress, but it was Alexander McQueen who was top the frocks tonight. Emily Blunt, Eddie Redmayne's wife Hannah and even the Duchess of Cambridge all graced the red carpet in gowns by the fashion house.

Nominated actress Viola Davis looked stylish in a sweeping blue dress, Amy Adams looked serene in emerald green and Daisy Ridley very wisely wore a jacket with her outfit. Taylor Hill looked amazing in a white column dress while Thandie Newton donned an elegant black dress for the occasion. So who will be the big winners tonight? In terms of fashion, I think Penelope wins hands down, with runner up bring Nicole Kidman.

RiRi takes to the skies for Harper's Bazaar US

Inspired by Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly across the Atlantic ocean, Harper's Bazaar US today released their cover star editorial featuring the one and only Rihanna. For the special 150th anniversary of the fashion magazine, Queen Rih was chosen to star on the cover and pose as the legendary pilot Earhart for the March issue. Photographed by Mariano Vivanco, the photos see Rihanna posing alongside 4 fellow pilots, on the wings of a jet plane and on the runway in a stunning Ralph Lauren gown. Wearing brands such as Stella McCartney, Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton, Tods and Hermes, this is one editorial that you can't miss. I was so excited when I saw these photos that I had to post them on the blog. If I could afford Stella McCartney, I would snap up that ivory shirt and khaki trousers along with the watch and aviators worn by Rih. She looks amazing in all the photos and represents girl power at its finest.

"There's something so special about a woman who dominates in a man's world. It takes a certain grace, strength, intelligence, fearlessness, and the nerve to never take no for an answer. Amelia Earhart was such a dynamic force in her industry, setting multiple aviation records in her time. So it was a no-brainer for me to team up with Harper's Bazaar in honor of a woman who held her own with the big boys." —Rihanna

Valentino finally steps into the Light

I am going through a Valentino renaissance. I have always liked Valentino, (liked not loved I must say) especially the elegance and sophistication which resonates from all of their collections. From the sweeping, silk dresses, classic stud shoes, soft blouses and red carpet gowns, Valentino are what I would call a safe brand. You're not going to see one season when they send punks down the runway. The will do 'punk' but with a magical, fairy tale spin. With Maria Grazia Chiuri, who's now at Dior, and Pier Paulo Piccoili working together during the years they spent at the brand, there was a period of pure beauty and wonder. And  now with Chiuri at gone, Piccioli can shine alone, taking centre stage at this beautiful brand.

Valentino's couture collection last week gave Pier Paulo Piccioli the opportunity to showcase his skills. Long, lean lines made the models look like angels treading carefully down the runway, layers of chiffon swept with the wind while pistachio shades worked with white, lemon, ruby red and ivory. The way the dresses fell reminded me of ancient Roman statues which stare serenely out across palaces and forgotten ruins. There was a real sense of majesty to the show with less attention paid to embellishment and more focus on the folds of material. Simplicity is what Valentino do so well, and now that Piccioli is working alone, I hope that his style will become more apparent and classic, not that it's not already classic enough. His love of high necklines and fluid shapes make him a love of Hollywood stars for red carpet events, while his demure clothing suits many of his Arab clients who favour longer sleeves and hemlines.

I was also drawn to Valentino's Spring/Summer 2017 campaign after seeing it in Vogue. Refreshing, poised and eye catching, this campaign feels like a very modern Valentino. Liya Kebede, Chirsty Turlington, Fei Fei Sun and new face Ratner stare hauntingly out of the photos in stunning black and white imagery by David Sims. Turlington is particularly beautiful. Wearing minimal make up, she bares all her lines and wrinkles, instead of trying to cover them with the help of air brushing which is very refreshing for an ad campaign. "The eternity of a portrait, the immediacy of a documented moment, the poised simplicity of introspection," explained Piccioli of this spring campaign. "A campaign that plays with time: what endures and what is unrepeatable."

The opposite pages feature whimsical photographs taken behind the scenes at the Valentino spring/summer 2017 show by Sims. I love the silk red dress which looks like a cardinal's robe given a make over while the blurred photos add a sense of magic and charm. I'm usually drawn to strong images especially for ad campaigns, so surprised myself that these Valentino ads should stand out as much as they do. I really am interested to see what Piccioli does in the future at Valentino, now that his former design partner is receiving rave reviews at Dior. Nevertheless, the true Valentino Garavani would be proud of this collection.
