New York Fashion Week Round Up

So, its come and gone. New York fashion week has blitzed by so quickly its hard to remember the BCBG Max Azria show that kicked off the fashion frenzy a week ago. But, there were some amazing shows and many excting trends awaiting us for spring summer 2014.

If you're a monochrome kinda girl, its time to celebrate! Black and white was everywhere this season: coats, dresses, bags, from Jasun Wu to Ralph Lauren's grown up glamour. Hands up if you live in prints? Flowery, dark and subdued prints truly made an impact at New York, with even Mr Marc Jacobs feeling the flowery spirit. Just so you know, a printed 1940's tea dress a la Michael Kors is a summer staple, so keep an eye out.
Crop tops, pleated skirts and big coats all look like they're here to stay for one more season at least, so don't start your fashion spring cleaning yet. One of my favourite trends seen at New York was the loose, relaxed, safari look as designers felt that women needed to feel more 'tranquilo' next Summer and so loose silhouettes and earthy colours were big news. Donna Karan, a highlight of New York, gave us a very exciting show - Who could forget those massive hats? African motifs, beautiful colours and huge belts gathered up loose fabric and hid all the parts that you really don't want people to see. Aztec prints and statement necklaces looked divine and I think that it was one of her best collections.

My favourite collection has to be hands down... Michael Kors. Sophisticated, feminine, romantic, chic, urban, the list could go on, as this show had everything that a woman could possibly want to wear in the Summer. There was even a cute cover up in the form of a knitted cardigan for those chilly summer evenings. 1940's dresses, sleek pants in cream and white, fitted maxi dresses and wonderful bags had the fashion front row practically drooling over this collection. This show had to be one of Kors' personal best.

Victoria Beckham, Alexander Wang, Calvin Klien and Cushnie et Ochs also went for the whole minimalist look while Rodarte and Proenza Shouler brought the cool, LA girl to New York. Diane Von Furstenburg and Anna Sui brought the happy-go-lucky, bright look to fashion week ( I mean their models smiled! You don't get that very often.) While Marc Jacobs and Ralph Lauren brought the drama on the final day, Oscar de La Renta, Jenny Packham and Marchesa gave us hollywood glamour with floor sweeping gowns adorned with the finest detailing (I can imagine the Duchess of Cambridge in a Packham gown this spring.)

There were some surprises too with Rihanna and Justin Bieber sat front row at Opening Ceremony's first catwalk show and poor Nicole Kidman getting knocked down by a bike outside the Calvin Klein show... She was unhurt thankfully. Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley gave their debut collection as designers for Marc by Marc Jacobs which was stunning and little Harper Seven sat next to Anna Wintour at the Victoria Beckham show... Is it possible to be envious of a two year old?

Overall, New York was fabulous, fresh and frivolous. Londons calling now and then off to my favourite fashion week, Milan, and then finally the big one.... Paris! Oh haven't we got a lot to look forward to in these dark, dismal times so keep checking back to MODA01for all the latest!!
