I have on average 4 costume changes, as I like to call them every morning. Yes, it's hard when my job is to look good even when I'm slouching around the house in trackies, but as us ladies know... Looking and feeling good plays an important part in our lives.
Did Marilyn Monroe ever fail to display in the fashion stakes? The answer: NO. She knew more than anyone, dead or alive that she was judged on those figure hugging dresses and the full face of make up, immaculately applied and stylish down to a t. Even back in Marilyn's day, fashion ran society as it does now. And finding that all important inner lady is rolling back into town with the new season, showing that looking good really does run our lives.
Take the woman at Raf Simons Dior fall 2013 show. Slick hair a la Elvis Presley, a flash of pink across the lips and a certain presence that said, 'Yes, honey. I'm delicate and beautiful... But you wouldn't want to mess with me!' From the 1950s Andy Warhol inspired dresses to the black and white motif with hints of colour, Raf did get this collection oh so right. As did Proenza Schouler who took us right back to the principals of what makes a lady look good. From the boxy silhouettes to the ostrich feathered skirts, editors and buyers alike had their autumn winter shopping lists growing in their heads. And the reason why? Because the lady is back. Dressing to impress. Keeping it simple, yet profoundly elegant. Personally I can't wait to grab that cream knitted viscose skirt from Celine.
So tomorrow, when I stare intensely at my wardrobe, hoping the 'fashion God' will provide me with the perfect outfit for the day, I shall remember to take my time and enjoy the moment, even if through gritted teeth. After all, that's what Marilyn would have done.
