The 2017 Golden Globe awards were perhaps the most politically stirring ceremony yet. With Meryl Streep bashing the soon to the president Donald trump in her lifetime achievement acceptance speech and host Jimmy Fallon making barbed jokes about the unpopular (and non deserving) President elect, actors used the Globes as a stage to vent their frustration.
With politics aside, La La Land was the big winner of the night scooping all 7 awards the film was nominated for. Emma Stone who looked exquisite in Valentino won for Best Actress while a very dapper Ryan Gosling won for Best Actor. La La Land also won Best Song, Best Director for Damien Chazelle and Best Picture for a musical for comedy. Other winners included Brits Tom Hiddleston for The Night Manager, Hugh Laurie and Claire Foy for The Crown. Isabelle Huppert won for best actress in a drama while Billy Bob Thornton won an award for his role in Goliath. Tracee Ellis Ross won the gong for best actress in a TV series for Black-ish which was another big moment of the evening.
But the real winner was Meryl Streep who was honoured with a lifetime achievement award for her outstanding contribution to film. She took to the stage in a beautiful gown and graciously accepted the award paying tribute to all the foreign talent which makes Hollywood so special. Brad Pitt also received a rapturous round of applause when he took to the stage to present an award showing that his Hollywood friends still have his back. Overall it was as always, a very glamorous night.
The cut throats jokes were limited this year with the absence of Ricky Gervais. Jimmy Fallon instead brought a fun spin to proceedings with a few technical hitches making the evening more entertaining. And then of course there was the star studded red carpet and the fashion! Versace was a big hit, with Reese Witherspoon, Naomi Campbell and Matt Damon and his wife all donning attire by the Italian fashion house. Pryanka Chopra looked amazing in gold Ralph Lauren, Nicole Kidman stunned in a very ornate Alexander McQueen gown with husband Keith Urban while Jessica Beil looked dramatic in a full black gown. Yellow was a big colour with Witherspoon, Emily Ratajowski and Natalie Portman all choosing lemon shades while I loved the simplicity of Amy Adams black strapless dress. Sarah Jessica Parker looked amazing in a white Vera Wang gown while Drew Barrymore, Chrissy Teigan and Sophia Vergara brought the sparkle to the red carpet. I loved Zoe Saldana's bright pink ruffled gown which really shouldn't have worked but instead looked amazing and Heidi Klum looked good in a midi monochrome number.
Usually the Golden Globes is seen as the more fun, sexier version of the Oscars with actresses flashing the flesh at every opportunity. But this year was classy. Dresses were tasteful and even if there was a bit of cleavage here and there it was nothing compared to previous years. See all the best dressed of the night below...
